The main role of the calmbirth® practitioner

The calmbirth® teacher’s main role is to provide the required number of educational sessions to small groups of clients in order to instruct them on their personal development of the calmbirth® method. It is expected that clients engaged in calmbirth® learning will utilise calmbirth® techniques for themselves during their labour.

The calmbirth® practitioner is not qualified to provide any advice on clinical matters and therefore can have no responsibilities with regard to the clinical management of labour.

The calmbirth® practitioner must therefore ensure that each client fully understands the purpose of calmbirth® training and the limitations of calmbirth® practitioners. This is set out in the Attendee Deed which is to be handed to each couple attending the classes to be signed by the couple.

The calmbirth® practitioner must always refer people with clinical concerns to their clinical care provider. In the case of women who have no clinical care provider, the calmbirth® practitioner must inform the client of the need to appoint a qualified midwife or obstetrician to monitor the pregnancy and advise them about their clinical needs.

The calmbirth practitioner understands that the calmbirth® programme has been developed as a unit within itself and must be taught as such. Any introduction of material from another course may undermine the effectiveness of the calmbirth® programme. For this reason calmbirth® practitioners, when conducting calmbirth® classes must use the calmbirth® class syllabus only provided in their training unless given permission by the calmbirth® organisation.
